A city in the kingdom of Anga. It was here that the Mahā Assapura and Cūla Assapura Suttas were preached by the Buddha (M.i.271ff.; 281ff.; MA.i.483).
According to the Cetiya Jātaka, Assapura was built by the second of the five sons of King Upacara of Ceti, on the spot where he saw a pure white horse. It lay to the south of Sotthivatī, Upacara's capital. J.iii.460.
